Sadly Similar

We try not to acknowledge

How frighteningly similar we are,

Not because we have the same

Eye colour, length of hair

Or general disdain for anything

That is unlike ourselves out there,

But only because how similar

The lumps in our throats are!

Such resemblance is not only

Hugely unsettling, but it also seems

Exceptionally unfair – to see a person

In the light of their problems,

And to have no solace to offer,

No comfort to spare.”

  1. “To see a person / In the light of their problems, / And to have no solace to offer, / No comfort to spare…” These lines are so painful, yet so universal. Sometimes it’s so difficult to know what to say or do to comfort someone, and it makes it worse when we feel that same pain and don’t know what to do to comfort ourselves. It can be a numbing experience, such a powerless feeling, when you want to reach out and help someone but you can’t, for whatever reason. The similarity of the “lumps in our throats” is such a brilliant image of shared pain, shared fear, shared humanity. I’m going to be thinking about this one for a while, that’s for sure. Your poetry inspires deep contemplation in its profound beauty. What a wonderful poem, Aaysid. πŸ™‚
